The South is the only region in Brazil where the four seasons are clearly defined. Winter is cool and snow is not uncommon on the mountains. The region is made up of three states - Paraná , Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. A strong European influence can be felt throughout the region due to a wave of immigration in the 19th century that brought many Germans, Italians and Poles, forming a very special culture. Curitiba, capital of the state of Paran is a city known for its excellent quality of life. Paran is also the site of a special surprise for visitors - the breathtaking Iguazu Falls, the largest in the world, located on the border between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Santa Catarina's coast is renowned for its beautiful beaches. Florianópolis, the capital, is located on an island and provides easy access to many of these beaches. In the state's hinterland, the German's influence is more evident - especially in the charming mountain towns of Blumenau, Brusque and Joinville. Rio Grande do Sul is the home of Brazil's famous "gaúchos". In Porto Alegre, the state capital, they still preserve timeless traditions such as eating "churrasco", the best barbecued beef in the world, accompanied by excellent wines and drinking "chimarrão" (bitter mate herb tea). Near Porto Alegre are Canela and Gramado, cosy mountain towns and white sand beaches, such as Torres and Tramandaí.
